Background of the Study:
Vigilante groups have increasingly become involved in the maintenance of local security and political stability, particularly in regions where formal law enforcement is perceived as inadequate. In Ifo, these groups are often mobilized by communities to address perceived political and social injustices (Folarin, 2023). While some view their actions as essential for upholding order, others argue that their involvement undermines the rule of law and exacerbates political tensions (Akinyele, 2024). The presence of vigilante groups raises questions about accountability, legitimacy, and their long-term impact on democratic processes (Balogun, 2025). This study investigates the role of vigilante groups in promoting or hindering grassroots political stability in Ifo. It critically examines the circumstances that lead to their formation, their methods of operation, and the broader implications for local governance and community trust (Akinyele, 2024).

Statement of the Problem:
The activities of vigilante groups in Ifo have created a complex dynamic that both addresses security concerns and challenges formal political authority. Their unregulated operations have led to incidents of abuse and further polarization, complicating efforts to achieve sustainable political stability. This study aims to delineate these challenges and assess the net impact of vigilante actions on grassroots stability (Folarin, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To examine the formation and role of vigilante groups in Ifo.
  • To assess their impact on local political stability.
  • To recommend measures for integrating community security initiatives with formal governance structures.

Research Questions:

  • What factors lead to the emergence of vigilante groups in Ifo?
  • How do these groups affect political stability and community trust?
  • What strategies can harmonize informal security practices with formal law enforcement?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Vigilante groups significantly influence grassroots political stability.
  • H2: Their operations are associated with increased community polarization.
  • H3: Integrative security policies can mitigate the negative impacts of vigilante actions.

Significance of the Study:
This study provides an in-depth examination of the role of vigilante groups in shaping grassroots political stability in Ifo. It offers recommendations to policymakers for balancing community-led security with formal governance structures (Akinyele, 2024; Folarin, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the role and impact of vigilante groups on political stability within Ifo Local Government Area.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Vigilante Groups: Informal groups organized to enforce security outside formal law enforcement channels.
  • Political Stability: The degree to which a political system operates without disruptive conflict.
  • Grassroots: The most basic level of community organization and participation.
